FY 2023/24 Gravity Sewer Improvements Project
Completed: September 2024
Contractor: Glosage Engineering, Inc.
Project Summary
The FY 2023-2024 Gravity Sewer Improvements Project rehabilitated approximately 15,600 linear feet (LF) of sewer pipeline ranging from 4 to 14 inches at various locations throughout the San Anselmo, Greenbrae, and Fairfax jurisdictions. Approximately 3,060 LF were constructed via open cut and 12,540 LF via pipe bursting. Forty new manholes were also constructed at various locations throughout the project. New manhole locations required excavation and backfill of an area approximately 8 feet by 8 feet, with varying depths. Most of these pipelines either fell within public right of way or in designated easements running through private property. For work in backyard easements, portable equipment was used due to space restrictions and to minimize impact. The purpose of the rehabilitation portion of the project was to reduce the risk of sanitary sewer spills. This was accomplished both by fixing defects that could cause overflows as well as sealing leaks, thus reducing wet weather inflow and infiltration.

Woodland Road Creek Crossings and Capacity Improvements
Completed: July 2024
Contractor: Glosage Engineering, Inc.
Project Summary
The Woodland Road Creek Crossings and Capacity Improvements project focused on replacing and rehabilitating sewer creek crossings in the Kent Woodlands area, which were prioritized for upgrade. The replacement of these sewers was crucial due to their heightened vulnerability to stormwater-related natural forces, which posed a risk of contamination to Tamalpais Creek and potential damage to the public sewer system. The project involved removing several exposed sewers within the waterway and replacing the public sewer along various sections of Woodland Road.

Butterfield/Arroyo-Kenrick Gravity Sewer Improvements Project
Completed: March 2022
Contractor: Ranger Pipelines, Inc.
Project Summary
The Butterfield/Arroyo-Kenrick Gravity Sewer Improvements Project installed 0.3 mi of diversion and replacement gravity sewer in San Anselmo between Arroyo Avenue and Kenrick Drive (on Butterfield Road) and replaced 0.3 mi of gravity sewer in Sleepy Hollow on lower Fawn Drive. The Butterfield section was the last capacity project required in the Cease and Desist Order from the Regional Water Quality Control Board, and the Fawn Drive section provides needed capacity and pipe replacement to prevent sanitary sewer overflows and reduce maintenance requirements.
Also included was 1,600 feet of new sewer line in the Butterfield Road right of way. Approximately 1,050 feet of sewer line in front yard easements were abandoned. Work on Fawn Drive replaced approximately 770 feet of sewer lines from Butterfield Road to #271 Fawn Drive.

Ross Creek Sewer Removal Project
Completed: October 2021
Contractor: Coastside Construction
Project Summary
The Ross Creek Sewer Removal Project removed an abandoned 21-inch diameter sewer from the creek bed of Ross Creek at the Shady Lane bridge. In order to minimize upstream erosion, natural rock features were used to create a sustainable riffle structure in place of the sewer (which was originally installed in 1926 and a replacement siphon was installed 7.5 feet below the streambed in Oct. 2019).
The abandoned sewer removal from the streambed provides a more natural-looking water feature as viewed from the Shady Lane bridge, as well as the environmental benefits of improving conditions for anadromous fish migration of the native steelhead trout population of the Corte Madera Creek watershed.
